Smithsonian Handbooks Rocks Minerals Smithsonian Handbooks DK Smithsonian Handbook Chris Pellant 9780789491060 Books Reviews

  • I bought the Smithsonian Handbooks Rocks & Minerals by Chris Pellant on . It arrived well packaged and in a timely manner. This is much more than a kids book to help with a rock collection. The book is well written and easy to follow and understand. It contains detailed information, photographs and characteristics on over 500 rocks and minerals. It is both an excellent beginners book and a reference guide.
  • Just received this book, bought it in "acceptable" condition, but when seeing the book it should've been "good" condition (the next level up) There's so much helpful info, it will keep me busy for a while. I'd write more, but I'm too excited to continue reading the book!
  • Got as an addition to a rock and mineral activity kit for my 8 year old grandson. He loves it and so do I.
  • I purchased this book for my 8 year old son. He is an avid rock collector and I wanted something that would help him identify the rocks he collects. It was exactly what i was looking for. Most rock books are a majority about their creation and a small amount of the book will describe the types. This one is great as it has many different types, large detailed (list form) pictures and descriptions of each. Its EXACTLY what i was looking for. The size is great, while not a pocket book, its large enough to have great pictures but still small enough that he is able to carry it around comfortably.

If you are looking for a book on rocks for your youth, this is the book that will fit that need.
  • Great encyclopedic but succinct reference book for rocks and minerals. Very good pictures. The way the book is laid out it's better for finding out about a specimen you already know, than trying to identify unknowns.
  • As a student seeking a bachelors in geology, I needed a reference book in which to go on, not just the textbooks required for class. This is definitely a great reference book to have, I thought. The book gives you a paragraph overview of each mineral. Also in the mineral portion, the book lists Specific gravity, hardness, chemical formula, cleavage, how the mineral forms, and any tests that you can use to identify the mineral. They are also separated by the groups the minerals are in, such as sulfides, etc. Some of the pictures are right on to what the minerals that I see in the labs look like, but then some don't even look close to what my hand samples look like. But as a geologist, we should know not to go strickly on looks. The rock section of the book I thought was better done. It is separated into the three rock groups igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. The pictures are a lot better here, they actually look like most hand samples. There is a paragraph description of the rock, the texture, origin, structure, grain size, T & P, as well as mineral assemblages are also listed. So if you need a quick reference on which to go by, this is the book I would recommend!
  • Descriptions are very thorough and the pictures are very vibrant and crisp. Bought this for my 5-year old son who seems to really into rocks right now. He loves the book and looks at the pictures all the time. We sometimes have tp read through some pages as a bedtime story (his idea not mine). I think I would have liked some of the geologic formation descriptions to be written in more plain language when possible, but that's a minor issue.

    Overall a great book.
  • A perfect field guide to help identify rocks/minerals. Sturdy, thick pages and high resolution pictures that provide the origins of the rock, hardness and other required identifying characteristics.
