On one dark and windy night, Ozzy steps out of bed, jumps out his window, and walks straight into the ocean. It's as if someone is controlling Ozzy's mind. He's saved by Sigi - Rin's daughter - and Clark, a mechanical robot bird. More than ever, Ozzy could really use the services of Rin, the Wizard for Hire.

When a mysterious package arrives in the mail containing a plane ticket and a thumb drive, Ozzy is certain it's from Rin. But when Ozzy, Sigi, and Clark arrive in New York, Rin isn't there. Instead they are met by the man who was the money behind the mind-controlling "discipline serum" created by Ozzy's parents. Ozzy was the final test case and is now the key to discovering the serum's secret. He is a very valuable boy. Once again, he's on the run.

As fate would have it, Rin appears just in time. But Rin's goal is more than a rescue mission. He needs an apprentice to cement his status and notoriety in the magical realm of Quarfelt - assuming the place even exists. As Rin's apprentice, Ozzy must complete five tasks to receive the Gift of Wonder. Ozzy is willing to help, but is now really the best time to enter a contest for wizards when something is controlling his mind? Especially when someone is out to destroy the people he loves?

"Ozzy Toffy believes his past life is totally behind him. During his adventures in New Mexico, Ozzy learned that his parents are dead, killed by the company that wanted to manipulate their scientific research for financial gains. So Ozzy has moved on, finding a new life and home with Clark, Sigi, and Sigi’s mother. However, Ozzy begins to experience hypnotic trances that draw him unwittingly into the ocean. These life-threatening experiences plunge Ozzy, Rin, Clark, and Sigi back into the world Ozzy’s parents were trying desperately to escape.

Skye reintroduces readers into Ozzy’s magically adventurous coming of age story. At the start of this book, Ozzy has accepted a magical happy ending with his parents is totally gone. This makes him pursue his own realistic ending, thinking it involves living the life of a normal teenager and staying away from anything that once involved his parents. Unfortunately, his parents’ past just won’t leave him alone once the hypnotic trances begin. So more detecting and deduction needs to happen before Ozzy unknowingly drowns himself. Ozzy eventually accepts that his normal life is totally gone when Rin returns and brings magic into Ozzy’s life again. Once he makes this mental switch, Ozzy finds that he has his own fantastical secrets to uncover. This thoughtful and whimsical read will have fans begging for the final book.

Apprentice Needed Wizard for Hire Book 2 Audible Audio Edition Obert Skye Kirby Heyborne Shadow Mountain Books Reviews

  • Wizard For Hire Apprentice Needed is the second book in a series that has turned out to be nothing short of pure middle-grade magic!

Backstory is important, so if you missed book one, Wizard for Hire, run to your nearest bookstore, library, or digital dealer and get a copy. I know someone reading this will say, “fantasy is not my schtick.” Don’t let that stop you. The wizard in question, Rin (short for Labyrinth), is less Dumbledore/Gandalf and more 21st-century Zen philosopher/slacker. Our protagonist, Ozzy, and his friend Sigi (who is also Rin’s daughter) even have their doubts about the validity of Rin’s claims to wizardry.

In book one, then 14 year-old Ozzy hired Rin to locate his long lost parents. All kinds of craziness and adventure ensued, including much madness and mayhem involving a sentient metal raven named Clark.

In book two, the cast of Ozzy (now fifteen), Rin, Sigi, and Clark has returned for even more madcap adventure. Rin, back in the wizarding world of Quarfelt, contacts Ozzy in Oregon with a cryptic message “the time has come…things are happening”. Meanwhile, Ozzy is experiencing mysterious compulsions that put him in dangerous situations where he has no awareness of what’s he doing — think sleepwalking, but Ozzy is awake, just mentally checked out. Ozzy’s lawyer gives him some items Ozzy’s parents had stashed in a safe deposit box that only lead to more questions. On top of all that, a strange man delivers a flash drive with a ticket to and from New York for Ozzy. Could it be Rin trying to reach out? To find answers to all the questions within these crazy happenings, you’re going to have to read the book!

Ozzy, Sigi, Rin, and Clark are a quirky, lovable, memorable bunch I can’t get enough of. And the best part? There will be a third book coming so the adventure will go on!

Here’s what you’ll find between the covers of Wizard for Hire Apprentice Needed a well-paced and fast moving tale, full of interesting characters with great interplay who will bring you a lot of laughs and even more fun!

  • I throughly enjoyed this book two i was sucked in right to the very end. I think what draws me in most about this story is the undeniable question is Rin really a wizard. Things always just seem to line up for him and he also really does have a strong belief that his a wizard and ozzy as we find out in this book will be his apprentice. The danger and excitement I served up quite wonderfully in this installment. Each chapter brings up more and more questions. Are Ozzy parents really dead? Why is Ray so determined to hunt ozzy down? Why the heck is Ozzy wanting to take numerous trips into the ocean? Of course also will Rin every actually use magic or just call an Uber instead?

As in the previous book we find out little nuggets about Ozzy family along the way. In this book we are once again teased with the element of if the parents are still living. Second we meet Ozzy grandfather who is one mean grandpa but does give a few more clues about why Ozzy parents left New York in the first place.

All the characters in this second book feel more solid and way more developed then this first book. Clark also has a way bigger hand in moving the story along and at times makes for quite a comedian. The airport scence with the lady was one of the funniest in the book.

We are left with more questions as the book abruptly comes to the end i almost felt like my copy was missing the rest of the story wait it can’t end their. So we are left with an epic cliff hanger and i for one am ready give me book three.
